Sheet Music Sites: Databases With Music

Music for the Nation: American Sheet Music, 1870-85

This database is part of the Library of Congress and boasts more than 47,000 pieces of sheet music that were all registered for copyright protection between 1870 and 1885. This collection includes music of all kinds, including popular songs, piano music, choral music (both sacred and secular), solo instrumental music, instrumental music for bands and orchestras, and instructional materials.

African-American Sheet Music

This collection is part of the Brown University Library and currently has more than 1,450 pieces of African-American sheet music.

Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920

This collection is part of the Duke University Libraries Digital Collections and has more than 3,000 pieces of sheet music that were published between 1850 and 1920.

The Lester S. Levy Sheet Music Collection

The Lester S. Levy Sheet Music Collection is part of Johns Hopkins University’s library. This collection has more than 30,000 pieces of American music from 1780 to 1980.

This collection was established by the Lewis Music Library at MIT; it consists of popular songs and piano compositions published in the United States. Most of the items in this collection date from 1890 to 1920, although there are selections of sheet music that were published outside of those dates.

19th Century California Sheet Music

This database contains 2,700 pieces of sheet music published in California between 1852 and 1900.

UNC-Chapel Hill Libraries Music Library: 19th Century American Sheet Music

This collection is part of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Music Library. It contains approximately 3,500 titles from the 19th century starting from the 1830s.

UT Song Index

Part of the George F. DeVine Music Library at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, this song index contains about 50,000 songs in more than 1,500 published anthologies.

Online Song Indexes and Scanned Sheet Music Collections

The San Francisco Public Library put together an index from libraries all over the country that point to their own songbook collections in order to help track down song titles.

The Center for Popular Music has a collection of 110,000 sheet music items with dates that range from the late 18th century to the present.

Bert Buhrman Sheet Music Collection

This collection has more than 5,000 titles with a focus on music from the 20th century.
