Where a Console Goes in a Modular Run

Because these sectionals are configured seat by seat, a console occupies a position in the run in the same way a seat does. That gives you real control, and it introduces a trade-off worth understanding: every console you add takes up linear space along the wall that a seat could otherwise use.

• Mid-run, between two seats. The most common placement. Serves both neighbouring seats and keeps the storage central to where people sit.
• At a corner. In an L-shaped layout, a console at the turn is reachable from both runs, which makes one console do the work of two.
• At the end of a run. Works as a side table for the outermost seat, and often the tidiest place to bring the power feed in.
• Multiple consoles across a long run. On a six or eight-seat piece, one console rarely reaches everybody.

How Many Consoles Does a Layout Need

A reasonable rule is one console for every two to three seats, positioned so nobody is reaching past another person to set a drink down. Beyond that you are adding width without adding much use.

Consoles or Tray Tables

These solve overlapping problems and it is worth knowing which you actually need. A console is fixed, adds width to the piece, and carries storage and charging. A tray table swings out from the arm, adds no width at all, and folds away when it is not in use.

In a room where wall width is the binding constraint, tray tables on the outer seats plus one central console often beats consoles throughout. In a large room where width is not an issue, consoles are the more substantial answer. Plenty of layouts use both.
