A wall hugger does not use less floor space overall. It relocates the space it needs from behind the seat to in front of it, which is a genuine win only when the back wall is the fixed constraint in your room. That covers most finished basements, apartments, bonus rooms over a garage, and any layout where the screen wall and the seating wall are both non-negotiable.

Where it matters less is an open-plan room with clearance on every side. If nothing is pinning your back row to a wall, a conventional recliner gets you the same comfort without the mechanism, and often a broader choice of models. Worth knowing before this becomes the filter you search on.

• Depth in front of the row. Confirm the fully reclined dimension on the product page and leave tolerance beyond it.
• Remaining walkway. Check that a reclined row still leaves a usable path across the room.
• Back wall obstructions. Four inches is tight enough that baseboards, registers and switch plates become relevant.
• Row width across the wall, minus clearance at each end if anyone walks past.
