The Meaning of Music

music

/ˈmjuːzɪk/   noun

We all know what music sounds like, but do we know what the term ‘music’ actually means? By definition, music describes the artistic arrangement of sound through melody, harmony, rhythm, tempo, and volume (known as dynamics).

Because music is created all around the world, many consider it a universal language for expression that has connected people from all walks of life for centuries!

Note for parents – Under 10

If your little one is under the age of 10, this definition may be more suitable: music is when unique sounds are mixed together to create an entirely new sound. People all over the world make music to share their stories and feelings.

The Wondrous Elements of Music

Music comprises five major elements: rhythm and beat, tempo, melody, harmony, and dynamics. No matter the genre of music you’re listening to, it will always comprise these essential building blocks. Unsure of what they mean? Don’t worry! Here’s a breakdown of each component’s role in creating music:

01 Rhythm & Beat - The Groovy Pulse

Rhythm and beat are best friends when it comes to creating music. They harmoniously combine to create the groovy pulse of a song that makes you want to get up and dance!

The rhythm is a set of notes (known as a sequence) that carry the song. A rhythm isn’t complete without its trusted partner the beat, which acts as a steady pulse. The beat is the sound that makes you tap your feet or clap your hands when you hear a song.

02 Tempo - The Speed of Music

The tempo is how slow or fast the music goes. There are over 10 types of tempos, here are the main ones worth knowing:

sky-blue-bg-1

Presto

very fast

sky-blue-bg-2

Allegro

fast and lively

sky-blue-bg-3

Moderato

sky-blue-bg-4

03 harmony - Blending Notes & Pitches

What is pitches?

a harmony is a blend of multiple notes, played at different sound levels (known as pitches).

What is Harmony?

once there is more than one pitch present at the same time in a song, there’s harmony

Harmony

You can create your own harmony with a friend, sibling, or parent by singing the same tune together at different pitches.

This magical combination adds depth to a song, creating a rich and vibrant sound that’s often unforgettable!

04 DYNAMICS - LOUD & SOFT SOUNDS

Dynamics refers to the volume of music; it determines how loud or soft the sounds are. Here are the main dynamics:

05 Melody - The Catchy Tune

The melody is the star ingredient for a catchy tune. It’s the part you remember the most, and will likely hum or sing. The melody is made from series (known as a succession) of pitches within the rhythm. Here’s an example: think of the ‘happy birthday’ song, the memorable tune that comes to mind is the melody!

What’s the Musical Alphabet?

The musical alphabet is a set of special letters used to name each musical note, chord, and key signatures.

Musicians will use the musical alphabet to compose and play songs with their instruments. Unlike the English alphabet which has 26 letters, the musical alphabet only has seven: A, B, C, D, E, F, G. Each letter resembles a unique note — musicians combine these letters to create melodies.
